I'm looking for inert black substrate to use as a cap over a layer of peat/pumice.

I don't want to use EcoComplete, Onyx, or Tahitian Moon because of price or fine grain consideration.

Is black Turface the only option? Does it actually appear black under water or it looks grey?

Petsmart or Petco have colored gravels, including black.

Most of the cheap Petsmart colored "gravel" will have the color start to flake off after a while, showing the white insides. (speak with experience)

I have had mine, some of which were from those stores, for more than 5 years. Haven't seen any discoloration in any tank. I guess results could vary along with everyone's own water chemistry and other chemicals present in the tank. (also speak with experience)
