I heard a lot of about this (do a search), and most of them isn't very good. From my understanding, it does work, but eats up kh.

For a couple of bucks more, you pick a semi-automatic unit from one of the sponsors.

Good luck.
I'm sure this has been discussed more then once before. Please try the search function.

But in a nutshell. For about the same money you can get a pressurized system that will last much longer, do a better job and in the long run be less expensive.
I agree, for the price you don't get much bang for your buck. The replacement bars are very expensive as well (about $30) and only last for a few months.

They only have a little impact on tanks smaller than 30 gallons, and on a tank bigger than that it's really a waste of money unless you add multiple units.
hmm ok thanx guys!

its just that its so cheap compared to the regular pressurized co2 ( from my lfs)

carbo plus: 170$ (can)
co2 presurized: 329$ (can)

so u see why i was interested....
Here's a link you'll find very helpful, http://www.aquahobby.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=11589&highlight=carbo+plus

Also, I read that it barely raises C02 levels to more than 10ppm.
Try this janlo:

(1) Purchase the CO2 equipment online, sans CO2 bottle, and have it shipped to Canada. You don't need the pH controller. Save that money for something else.

(2) Make a post in the For Sale forum, asking your fellow Canadian hobbyists to help you source a CO2 bottle. Or hopefully one of them will respond in this thread. You can also post on the APD. There are many veteran Canadian hobbyists on there eh. <-- gross misuse of the lingo eh? :D

Alternatively, ask your children/friends if s/he knows of a dealer who sells CO2 tanks to...ummm...college students for ummmm...stuff. They are usually employees of the major gas supply houses who do this on the side; so you'll most likely get a great deal. Around my neck of the woods, the price of a single empty 5 pound tank is $100. I can get the same bottle for $50 filled from one of these side-dealers. If your budget permits, then purchase the 10, 15, or 20 pound tanks. Refills cost roughly the same, but a larger tank allows you to go longer between refills, a process that I find to be extremely cumbersome.

I was speaking with a gas supply house last week, and the owner informed me that with steel prices rising, the commercial cost of these bottles are going to skyrocket. The alternative is to use an aluminum tank, but I can't find any dealers in the area that supply them. :(

You can get a good aluminium cylinder at www.beveragefactory.com for about USD55.00 plus shipping. I have dealt with them before. They're very good. The regulators work well too.

ahh thank you all for your great responses!
well the problem is that i dont have a credit card right now ( always been ok without it). In fact each time i surf the web, i'm amazed how much you americans are using the net for commercial transactions... since here nobody is doing that, in Québec province ( i think that quebec has the lowest rate of electronical commercial transaction in n.america).

anyway, i keep those infos in mind, for the time when i ll have a credit card, or ask a friend or family...

I dont know if im ready to invest in a big co2 machine anyway, since i like low tech, am a newbie, and with only 2.1 wpg and 2 hagen ladders + flourish excel, my plants are doing ok. If the carbo plus was going to be good, i would have bought it, cause its really cheaper... but now that you told me that...

cs:'' There are many veteran Canadian hobbyists on there eh. <-- gross misuse of the lingo eh? ''
well im from quebec and english is my second language, so i dont really know the local expressions of english canadians ;) i learned not so long ago that they were using the '' eh'' all the time.

thanx all
