I was in a local fish store the other day and they had a tank full of cherry barbs. They all looked like males and they all had outstanding, bright red coloration. Was this a particularly good strain or do they hormone dope these fish or something? I have image searched the net and the ones at the LFS look better than any pics I have found.

Healthy, happy Cherry Barbs can be very brightly colored. Maybe they take good care of the fish. I guess you would have to ask the LFS about the hormones.

I agree with Kevin, bright red cherry barbs are happy barbs. They would also get bright red trying to show off infront of each other to win a female [which was missing in that tank :) ]
