clear water

I have some tannin soaked water and I was wondering whats the best way to get the tannins out to make the tank appear less yellow. I was thinking of running some carbon, but i'm afraid it might take out too many nutrients. What do you guys do to clear tannins?

Water changes, however you still have the issue of replacing nutrients removed.

If the source of tannins is driftwood, remove it from the tank, boil and rinse it until your water runs clear. Then you won't have it continuing to add the tannins to your water and you can remove the bulk of what's left in the tank through water changes.

Running carbon for a week will not hurt your plants, so I would do a 50% water change then add carbon for a week. I assume that you boiled the wood before placing in your tank, if not then I would do as Jans says.

Use Purigen untill the water goes clear; it's the strongest absorbent. As for carbon, it is ineffective after 3 days so it shouldn't harm your plants that much.

If you have a ultraviolet light unit, try running the tank water through that for a few days. I am not positive, but I think that the UV breaks down the tannins.
