hi everyone. I have a few crypts that i recently added to my tank. I am getting crypt rot and was wondering if i can cut off the stems down to the rhizome or bulb, whatever a crypt has? Also how would this be done. Thanks
Just cut off the dieing leaves as close to the base as possible. You do not need to remove the plant from the substrate to do this. I just use a pair of scissors to cut the leaves off.
I freaked the first time I tried to grow crypts because a few days after I put them into the tank the began to melt away...it's no biggie. A couple of weeks later they were bigger than when I got them.
in my opinion, most crypts are the easiest plants to maintain. i moved a couple to a holding tank and provide 0 (zero) fertilizers, other than what the fish produce and a 13 watt CFL. and they're growing after the initial melting.
Yeah man, crypt melt happens. Nothing to worry about.
I generally just let it melt on it's own, removing leaves as they really start to look nasty. Most of the time this means removing them all, but sometimes a few survive.
