I have a nice piece of driftwood, that barely fits in my 75 gallon that has not stopped leaching tannins. I soaked it for at least 3 weeks in a utility tub and then got impatient. I have been doing water changes almost every other day just to make the plants viewable. This has been going on for about 3-4 months. Its too big to boil, so what can I do to make it stop?
not much you can do if you cant boil it. try carbon and purigen in the filter. i've had natural driftwood leach for 5-10 years in my oldest tanks. it just depends how long if ever it was submerged before you got it.
No negative effects from carbon that I know of. There is a concern among some planted tank entusiasts that carbon can absorb fertilizers that you put in and then the plants starve. There is a thread about this that Hoppycalif started in the "Science of Aquatic Fetilizers" forum where someone actually posted which substances are absorbed by carbon and it seemed to suggest there is no need for concern.
If it will fit put in a dishwasher with no detergents and use hot water. Run it thru all wash and rinse cycles. Let cool down with an air dry and then rinse it the best you can. This works for me.
I will have to wait until the wife leaves for vacation to do this.
