I'm new to planted aquariums. Not sure if this is a good place to ask. I understand cedar is not aquarium friendly. Does it make a difference if the piece of cedar has been sitting outside in the elements for a decade? I'm not exactly sure if this is cedar or not. I will upload a picture if necessary .

yea upload a pic cedar is risky.

Only certain types of cedars are usable, coming from personal experience here, cedar is a VERY difficult type of wood to use, but definitely beautiful once done.

It needs to be VERY aged, like 30+ years. Reason is because cedar leaches a chemical that kills plants around it naturally. So its needs to be old, and worn out. When you clean it, take double the normal time to clean it, boil it more, wash it more, soak it more, everything x2-3.

I know this comment isn't much help but I'm In a hurry, lol.

Thanks,
Nate

Every bit of info helps. Thank u. Like I said, I'm not even sure if its cedar. If it doesn't have bark or leaves I don't know. Lol. Here is the pic. Sitting like it is, its about 3 ft long 16 inches wide and angles upward to about 18 inches high

do you remember where u got this piece of wood? what state are you in if you don't mind me asking. Also if you remember where u got it if it were in the woods, were the majority of trees around it in the area cedars?

Honestly I cant tell 1 bit if this is a cedar or not...

Nice wood!

Lots of different trees are called "cedar". In my region we have two species: Juniperus virginiana and J. ashei. As living trees and freshly cut wood, both have the allelopathic characteristics that DutchMuch mentions. But I have used well weathered large pieces of both in my tanks with no problem. Judging from the appearance of yours, I think it is safe. I suggest you pressure wash it first to remove dirt and small soft bits of wood that might make a mess in the tank.
