Drop checker solution?

669 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bkw1982
I recently made a drop checker out of a cough medicine cup and for the solution i mixed tap water with distilled water until i got a kh of 4. The drop checker started off dark blue, and after a couple hours truned green. My only concern is that i may be getting a false readings due to the tap water.

So can tap water screw up my readings?

Thanks
Brandon

tap water is not as clean as distilled, but with a kh of 4 it may work.
Tap water doesn't work at all, because the alkaliniity of that tap water comes from things other than carbonates. The 4 dKH has to be from carbonates only. Mix sodium bicarbonate, baking soda, with distilled water to get the 4 dKH, not tap water.
I kinda figured as much, thanks.
