There are a variety of factors which could influence your kh, and pH. With a drop checker, the only thing affecting the pH of the solution in the bulb is the amount of CO2 in the water. The CO2 in the water will diffuse out of the water and into the liquid in the drop checker and change its color (pH). You eliminate any other acids etc which can affect pH/kh relationship.

But if you're using the kh/pH relationship and your plants and fish are doing fine, and you're satisfied, stick with it. A drop checker is not a mandated item for the tank. :)
