Earth brown topping for my soil

Hi. I'm trying to find an earthy brown topping for my soil for my El Natural tank. I'm keen to avoid plain gravel as I simply don't like the look of it. I'm considering Red Sea Flora Base but worry that I may compromise the "El Natural" and introduce problems?

I've got a 24G with Schultz Aquatic Plant Soil. It's tan in color. I rinsed it in a bucket for about 20 mins, it still clouded the water for about three days but now it looks nice. The CEC for Schultz is excellent. You can get it at Home Depot or Lowes, 10 lbs for about $6.00. Here is a picture:
