the input going into the canister is 5/8'' while the output going to the tank is 1/2''. You probably could get away with one filter depending on how big of a bioload you are planning. Even with one filter, you always want to make sure you have enough circulation in the tank. So once you set up your filter, if you don't feel you have enough circulation, then another filter would help (if you have the money) or a relatively inexpensive powerhead would be wise).
