Re: Elatine Triandra

I was looking for this for about 3 weeks and finally found some last week from a guy on plantedtank. As soon as it grows out some I will glady hook you up if you don't find any or don't mind waiting?

I have read that this plant can grow well in low light. I also understand that the low growth pattern is normal. I think it's a slow grower. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. :D
thats what I have read as well. I was interested in using it in my 75P but decided against it.
in my experience it actually needs high light. When it doesn't get it, it melts. That was the problem with using it in the foreground in the past. As the plant grew taller the lower parts got shaded and melted, and the plants would start floating.....

...verrrrrrrrry interesting!
you can actually trim them to keep them low, but it does become a fast grower and gets quite tedious....
The problem with E. Triandra from my experience has been that it requires constant trimming to prevent the the lower parts from shading out and all of floating up to the surface, as Hooha said above. The problem with trimming this plant is that it causes a HUGE mess. It is very time consuming to tend to, TexGal! It is VERY pretty, though, and provides excellent color in the foreground, so I understand your temptation. I stay away from it now....not worth the price in time!
I used to keep it for ages too. What a lovely plant, but it does need higher light. I grew mine in 2 wpg and it grew flush with the substrate, but it does tend to grow quite quickly and shade itself out. Trimming isn't that bad though, if you trim every week along with all the other plants it won't build up to unmanageable levels.

I have been after the plant for the last month or so and I finally found someone who has a small culture. My plants are in the mail as we speak! He was so nice - sent them to me for free along with all kinds of extras!!
BUMP! Anyone????
Hey saw this and thought you might be interested... He posted yesterday that he still has some available at TPT...

I would love to get a few fry's if you ever have them for sale :)
Thanks Reef Jones - I found it and some is on it's way! :D

Davesnothere - I'm not doing anything to breed them. If they do it, they do it. :D
Just like 2 of my "male" mollies bread and one fine morning I had about 10 frys lol. I am just in case they breed... :)
Anyone still looking for this plant may want to check with Yuriy to see if there's any available for sale. A little bunch was included with my plant package. First time I've seen it. Very attractive little plant so I hope it takes hold.

I'm loving this plant. It's really a nice groundcover. I have yet to find a ground cover that you don't have to trim. I think there is maintenance with them all. This plant stays low and spreads relatively fast. It's really nice.
