OK, I can't seem to get any plants to grow in my tank. I've tried several different things and plants that most say are unkillable and I can kill them. I've tried fertilizers, new lights (still only 30 watts on a 60 gallon tank), different plants, more water changes, etc. So far nothing has worked and the advice I'm getting is that I probably need more light.

I've said in the past I don't really want a planted tank, just a fish tank with live plants in it so I don't want to go overboard with the light. I've found one I think will work that is 96 watts or about 1.5 w/gallon. Opinions are welcome on whether this is a good light or not for my needs

Sorry, 36 x 18 x 22 I believe.

I need a 36" light and eventually it will go on a 6' tank so am thinking to adding another when that time comes.

It seems fine to me, the tank would be a low light setup. I'm not sure how you'd be able to fit it on a 6', but on your 60gal it would be fine I think.

I'd eventually get another for the 6' tank so it would sit on one side and the other 36" light would cover the other.

Depending on how many gallons your 6' tank is, you might want to invest in a 2 x 96W fixture. You can always run one bulb on your 60g.

Isn't a 6 foot tank a 180 gallon tank? If so, two 96 watt light would be far too little for anything but low light plants, and not even all of those would do well. Dooboogoo has the right idea - a dual 96 watt fixture.

Sorry should have specified that the new tank is 125 gallons. 72 x 18 x 23 I think. I'm not positive on the height. Two 36", 96w lights would give me 192 watts or about 1.5w/gallon in the 125 as well.
