I bought the 12" 2x18 and the legs do not allow for wider extension. Has anyone made any modifications to this fixture so wider legs could be added. The channels are on the bottom of the fixture.
I need roughly 1 inch on either side.
Gee I hope I am explaining this correctly.

My initial guess would be to lay the light on something that will span the length of the tank and support the weight of the light itself. Something like a wooden board with a hole cut out of the light. You can also try to work some brass or other softer metal and create extensions that fit onto the channels in the light but extend the sides.

My initial thought though is to build a mini light hanger. Screw in eyebolts into the top of the fixture and hang it from a small chain or braided steel cable. Build a small lighting hanger from EMT or any other type of piping.
