Hi every one

I'm Phillip AKA; the philfarm:cool:

I'm into the planted side of the addiction and keep mainly, Discus, Rams, corys and tetras, although I cant resist a novelty ;)
I started fish keeping about a year ago and haven't looked back since...

Hopefully this forum will give me a chance to share knowledge, ideas and our passion for the hobby, so I'm looking foward to it...

The main reason I joined is to get an Idea of how "other" people do things, In South Africa the selection of flora and fauna is VERY restricted so the hobby hasn't really taken off yet, as a result there are often unanswered questions...

Here is a pic of my main tank:

And here is one of my koi pond:

look forward to hearing from you guys:yawinkle:

regards
phill

Welcome to the board Phillip!

Your tank and pond are beautiful!

I'm glad you decided to join us, and we look forward to hearing more from you. :)

PS, we have a good friend in S. Africa who stayed here in the states for a few years (for work), and now we really miss him and his family not being around.

Hey guys thanks for the replys and compliments!

That red plant is Barclaya longifolia, it has since doubled in size and shot lots of plantlets, however I think it is trying to go into a dormant period because I increased my photo period to get my Anoponogeton cryspus and some other plants to flower, and it has lost afew leaves!

@JanS, who was he, it is a fairly small aquatic community so I may know him..

ps. is it allowed to talk about shrimp and other inverts on this site?

Well, you can talk shrimp and inverts in this section, but you get a much better discussion if you go directly to that specific area of the board. Shrimp & other Inverts

The guy I know there is Johannes Louw, but the last time I talked to him, he didn't have any tanks set up, even though they were thinking about it. He works for SASOL, which used to be a part owner of the company I work for.

Hey there Philfarm

Im also from South Africa, where about do you stay?

Ive also been in the hobby for about a year, worked in a fish store for a while, and no matter how hard i try i cant find a good ground cover! do you have the same prob? It feels like every store i walk into has exactly the same range of plants, its so disappointing.

I live in Joburg, and the only fish store that ive been into that impressed me was VIP pets in North Gate, and even they have a really poor range of plants. And nobody has anything interesting like shrimp or anything. Nothing you can do though, maybe the hobby is bigger on the coast...

Hey man Im in CapeTown at the moment! as for ground covers, I got so pissed off I got a group of guys together and we imported HC, gloss, pygmy chainswords... so thats not much of an issue for me any longer but I understand your sentiments:frusty:

As for shrimp go to a river and catch some yourself! the shrimp we have closely resemble glass shrimp, but I also have some cherry shrimp and bumble bee shrimp as well as FW mussles and snails (for everyone who doesnt understand why this is of any importance; it is because all Inverts and most plants are on our country's ban lists:mad2:) my suggestion would be to join a local forum like apsa.co.za...

ps. the best LFS in joburg is apparently "animal kingdom" in hillfox...

regards,
phil..
