This ditch is only about 2 miles from my house. The picture shows Micranthemum umbrosum in the middle and a Polygonum sp. at the lower left. I don't know what the species is at the top, and I never got a chance to try it in an aquarium, because the ditch got dug up and replaced with an underground pipe. There were at least three other species there that I wanted to try out. I think this ditch was so good for plants because the water had a lot of iron. There were iron deposits on the leaves of the Micranthemum when I collected it. This iron comes from what I call 'iron seeps' where water loaded with iron seeps slowly out of soil. The iron starts precipitating out producing a shiny scum on the surface and rusty deposits along the sides and bottom of the seep.

This where I caught the Sailfin mollies. Some would say it is the ugliest culvert they have ever seen. Beauty is in the eyes of the mad biotopist. The culvert does a 90 deg bend. The bend is concrete. Off of the bend, the water has made a little pond where the mollies are.
