...and wetlands, specifically. I came across it when I was searching for articles about umbrella palms. It seems, according to this article that, at least in the wild, aquatic plants have a tremendous positive impact on the amount of beneficial bacteria in their immediate surrounding. Should be read in conjunction with Nitrogen Uptake in Aquatic Plants. It explains why it's next to impossible to totally get rid of nitrates in the typical NPT since the plants themselves provide safe harbor for the very bacteria that are competing with them for nutrients:
