biotope not biotype

Skylsdale: You're absolutly right but I think this is one occasion when it probably might not make any differance. Sometimes popular usage of a word is more right than the dictionary one. Just listen to the slang ways people use english and the words that have become usable evan in my lifetime...Far-Out anyway....Jimjim

Well, if you want to get technical, the correct English term for a "Biotope Aquarium" would be "Biotopic Aquarium," but who's splitting hairs? Biotopic doesn't even seem to exist as a word, anyway :)

One also might stumble across the word biocoenosis when describing this sort of thing. It may even be more correct.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Then ignorance reigns, and you have things like foreign prime ministers fired for using words like "niggardly," just because no one knows any better.

Correct the people so they can use the correct term instead of perpetuating ignorance.

Actually, I usually see biotope, only rarely see someone using biotype.
Exactly. The times I have seen people use "biotype," they are usually new to the game and biotope aquaria in general. To be honest, when I first saw the title to this forum, I assumed it was run by newbies...or at least people who hadn't done the few seconds of research to understand what a biotope (or biotype) actually is.

But it's better than biotypical. At least you're using the correct word as the root.

The name is changed. It has always read biotypes.

Skylsdale, I appreciate you bringing this to our attention. The fault is only mine.

I am a newbie to biotope aquariums. However, I think if you do a little digging, you will find the moderators and members to be quite knowledgeable on the subject.

No problem, Art...and there was no offense ever intended in my comments! Although I said 'newbies' typically seem to use the word biotype, I did not mention that I have found those who post in this forum to be actually quite knowledgeable. It's a good forum, and nice to see others active and interested in their local environments.
