After buying a Lamotte Phosphate kit because my cheaper brand didn't show a result after I added a few drops of Fleet enema to the test tube and tested, I tried the same with my Lamotte: One drop of Fleet enema. Still, I am not getting a phosphate reading!

Can someone help me with this? Am I using it correctly? Are you supposed to view the tested water sample with the ampule of water in front of it? The tube itself was a dark blue color, but when viewed per the instructions, there was no color. I'm really confused and am ready to throw the kit out the window, fancy axial reader and all! :evil:

Nope. I threw mine away. I use the $7 Aquarium Pharmaceuticals (AP) test kits for PO4 and NO3. Perfectly suited for our needs, cheaper, faster, safer. You might have to online order the PO4 kit, but if enough of us ask for it I'm sure the bigbox pet stores would carry it.

BTW, when I had a LaMotte NO3 kit and compared results to the AP, they both reported essentially the same result. Sure, the LaMotte said something like 7.5 while the AP said 'between 5 and 10', but for what we are doing it's the same result. And if I remember correctly, you have to multiply the result of the LaMotte NO3 comparitor by 4.4, so if the color is between colors of the comparator, it's a guess anyway.

Hach and LaMotte? A pox on both their houses, in a friendly 'we don't need you' way. [-(

I have to multiply by 4.4? :shock: :shock: So 4.4 x 0 is still 0...? I'm soooo confused!

I spent all that money for nothing? :evil:

I have the Lamotte Phosphate kit, and if you got a dark blue color in the tube, that means that there was a lot of PO4. You just have to compare the amount of blue color in the test tube with the amounts in eight little ampules in the comparitor gadget. The closest match gives you the correct concentration. You stick the tube in the Comparator gadget. If you put it in the left slot, you can compare the amount of blue color with 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 ppm concentrations. If you stick the tube in the right slot, you can compare with 4.0, 6.0, 8.0 and 10.0 ppm concentrations.

But the instructions say to view it with the little ampule of distilled water and the two other tubes next to the test sample. So, are you saying not to use the distilled water sample in front of the test tube to view it? If so, then that would make sense! With the ampule of water in front, I don't get a reading at all :(
