I am pretty sure the local variety of Ludwigia here in central Mississippi is L. repens. In the spring it gets red with long, linear leaves. In the summer it is a plain green plant with oval leaves.

Ludwigia repens in spring

No, not on land. These plants are in three to four inches of water. The area was dug up last summer, and that is why the bottom is so light colored. The plants are getting re-established.

This picture, taken at another ditch, shows some of the variety of leaf shape and color in the Ludwigia.

Central Mississippi, in the Jackson area. Ludwigia is everywhere. It is in every depression that might harbor a puddle after a rain as well as in the ditches that have water most or all of the year. I suppose I ought to try out all these different looking types in an aquarium to see if they stay different or become the same in appearance.
