I own a 55 gallon tank for my turtles, and bought the Magnum HOT Filter about 4 weeks ago. It's been working fine, but the water has started to get increasingly cloudy and opaque. So I decided to try the micron filter. So I turned off the filter, unplugged it, and replaced the carbon canister with the micron filter. I followed the directions exactly, and put the filter back on and turned it on. However, the water from the inside of the filter just emptied through the outtake pipe and nothing entered through the intake pipe. I tried this several times before I went back to the original carbon canister, and found the same problem in that one.

This is a problem, because I can't reach marineland or petsmart (where I purchased it,) due to it being a weekend. I probably won't be able to refund it anyway, because I purchased this over a month ago.

I checked all of the pieces meticulously, and read the instructions/directions closely. I don't know what's wrong. I am keeping my turtles in a separate tank right now until I get the filter fixed, but I would like to have it fixed soon.

Any advice?

This is the filter by the way: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752361

I had a similar problem with my HOT years ago.

I found out that when I reassembled it, I had the big black rubber washer in the wrong place.

Double check your assembly closely. You may have a part out of order (out of position).

I have the same problem with my Magnum and I go back over everything and it is usually something I didnt hook up right, like sometimes the tubes get switch and I hook the out to the intake and vice versa then I fell like an idiot because I get so mad and it ends up being something little like that.

I have had a h.o.t. 350 running for almost 5 years and number one cause for any trouble i have had is those darn black o-rings either i put them in wrong spot or once i lost one, NEVER to be found again. second would be that o-ring in the lid not sealed correctly. Third after a couple of years the little clear tube that runs up along the center black tube, it clogs or in my case the glue deteriorated after so many years, this tube gets the air out of the filter and not working can make filter act a little weird some times.
