I'm working on a nice desktop type aquarium. Going for the wabi-kusa style but I'm going to add a filter/heater cause i'd like to keep some fish and shrimp in there also.

First I'll be starting off with this tank: http://www.adgshop.com/60cm_Flat_Cube_Garden_p/102-8555.htm

I worked it out to be roughly 8.5 gallons. My goal is to have it filtered and heated but the only equipment in sight would be a clear tube sucking "dirty" water out and another flowing the filtered and heated water in. It's been about a year since I setup a planted aquarium and this is my first nano.

What I envision is a hidden 1 gallon tank with some kind of filtration system and a small heater. I'm not quite sure on how to move the water or setup the filtration, any ideas or solutions?

I have a 5.5 gallon and I use a combination of an Aquaclear 70 (not plugged in) along with a Fluval 105 canister. The intake tube is in the tank, runs through the canister filter, then the outflow goes into the Aquaclear 70, which flows back into the tank.

In addition, I use a 50W heater which is kept in the Aquaclear. The result is the only equipment in the tank is an intake tube. And I get a crazy amount of filtration with relatively light water flow, and extra water volume from both the Aquaclear and canister filter.
