I'm curious about a Walstad set up. Actually, been curious about it for maybe 40 years! But breaking down my current high tech setup is out of the question, at least for now.

In the meantime, I'm wondering about any potential value in placing small porous bags of soil under the gravel at selected places around the tank. Maybe centered among areas of plantings.

Thoughts please?

I have a modified dirt tank. I start with only half the with dirt where the crypts are. And I froze the dirt and broke it into pieces and inserted into certain spots later on.

I think I got the nutrient benefit for my crypts but there are no CO2 benefit so inject CO2. The tank is many years old now and I dose small amounts of nutrients every day.

Excellent. I hadn't thought of freezing the dirt. It's just a long acting substitute for root tabs.

What soil brand do you use, mistergreen?

I used cheap top soil, nothing special.
