The smell, worms looking for oxygen, and the color are not good. Apparently the soil is very rich with fresh organic matter and is rapidly decomposing. This is a normal process for rich, newly submerged soils during the first 2-6 weeks.

Whenever the bowl looks "dirty" or "smelly", I would do 90-100% water changes. Every once in awhile, poke the substrate with a long thin object (opened paper clip, etc) to bring oxygen into soil layer. For such a small bowl, I see no point in adding a filter.

Main thing to look for is plant growth. Your second picture of the bowl looks promising. Anything dirtier than this I would take action.
