The nature aquarium style does not try to imitate nature per say. Instead, it tries to capture the essence of nature --to make a tank seem both natural yet carefully tended. A layout should not look contrived.
I think the best example on how the Nature Aquarium style attempts to do this is by trying to make wood more natural/aged (wabi-sabi concept) through tying moss and ferns.
That is my take on it, anyways...
