Hello, I have been keeping tanks since I was a kid. I have almost always kept large SA/CA cichlids. I recently began setting up two 30 gallons, and decided to try planted tanks again (it's been a long time since I tried one out, so I am basically starting from "scratch"). Look forward to learning as much as I can, and hope to use that to avoid failing with the 30's. I would like to stock the tanks with small cichlids of course:D.

Welcome to APC! You've come to the right place to learn about keeping plants. What type of cichlids are you planning on?
Well, I am thinking about several. Needing to get it narrowed down a bit. Looking at rams, cockatoos, buffalo heads, kribs, ands a few others. Not sure how the buffalo heads would do, from what I gather the kribs would be a little too aggressive for what I want with these tanks. Those are about it, unless there are suggestions? I have kept many of the dwarf cichlids once upon a time, but never breed them, and would like these planted tanks to be a breeding ground for them. Thanks for the welcome and any input you might have.
welcome to APC!!

i have kept multiple types of kribs in my main and breeding green sevrums in my corner planted tank. they look great with plants and for the most part have left my plants alone. my krib ate about $20 bucks worth of UG but he says he is sorry but it was yummy. i grounded him no brine shrimp for a week!!! j/k

EDIT: when any of them breed its pretty much their tank. they have a huge territory. the sevrums have basicly their own tank with 2 brown corys and 1 pleco. the krib no longer has a female.
I had a pair of kribs in my 20 gallon with guppies. There were no problems between the kribs and guppies or plants but the female krib didn't last long. She spawned once because I now have several (or more as the tank is heavily planted and they move fast) 1/2" long baby kribs, but then she died. I did see the male chase her a few times, so I'm afraid he may have harassed her to her death. They are a neat fish and I'm glad I bought them, I just wish it hadn't cost the female her life.
:welcome:to APC!
Thanks for the welcome!

 I [smilie=w: severums! Do you have a good stock? I have had some problems finding the ones that I would like locally. The Rotkiels are AWESOME!
One of the other forums I am on people have mentioned the aggression problems with the Kribs. I am used to aggression, but I would really like to keep rasboras and corys with some type of dwarf cichlid pair. If I can't find any that are relatively peaceful spawners I will go with a couple of males from different species. I could always get rams, but I have some in another tank with angels. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.
they are great sevriums. my wife picked them up 7-8 months ago. they started "courting" soon after i added a full size tiger lily. they had three spawns before this one, the first three didnt make it past baby fry stage(mostly my fault i didnt know they had layed eggs and i upset them while cleaning so the mom and dad had a baby feast) this last spawn is getting to the point where you can tell they are severiums about 1/2 to 3/4". if it where spring or fall i would be selling them soon but i wont ship fish in summer or winter, never had any luck getting them through the mail.

In that case I am looking forward to the fall! :D
Welcome!
Glad you could make it on over here. Hopefully I'll see you at one of the HAAS meetings. Maybe we should apply for our own little subforum over here. :)

I am thinking I will most surely be at the July meeting! Of course they are offering BBQ :hungry:. Having our own little corner here might be nice:). Thanks to everyone for the warm welcoming.
BBQ :hungry:
Heh heh. I think they "forgot" to tell me that little bit of knowledge on purpose. Somehow, word got out of how much i can eat.

 Yeah, it is at someones house, there is a post about it on the forum. I am going to try and make it, if the BBQ is at least decent then I figure it is worth it:D. Of course they could be talking about grilling and not BBQ'ing, BIG difference in my book. Let's hope not. Hopefully see you there.
