I want to add Peat to my canister filter in my 20 gallon. I am going to try 1g peat per liter in a stocking trading it out on a monthly basis. No fish or anything in the tank. Do you all find that peat alters the color of the water? I was going to use spagnum peat moss.

Sounds fine. Peat usually discolors the water in large amounts so you will probably get some discoloration. The color is not harmful and a lot of aquatic life seem to find it soothing.

Peat will discolor the water but it will benefit the fish. Make sure that you measure the pH of the water until it stabilizes and make sure that all the fish you have in the tank prefer lower pH.

Good Luck.

It will lower your KH but your small amount that you plan on adding may not affect it much if at all.
