It looks pretty good, especially for only a month old. :)
That's a good looking tank! Mine don't usually look that nice a month after a redo. I take it this is your first tank? You've done a great job with it, there's no need to be embarrased about it!

Please make sure to keep us updated with its progress.

Best,
Phil
Very nice! How about giving us some close up shots?
Dear Oakraid,

Looks good!

Why don't you give us all your parameters..... we may be able to contribute something that will help keep the tank looking good, and maybe even better. Longevity is the key.

Want to think you guys for the compliments..appreciate it. The tank doesn't compair to some of the pic's of your tanks I have seen, BUt am new at this.
The tank is kind of a jungle right now, but read to plant heavily in the begining.
My parimaters are .. PH 7.8 GH 7dgh KH 4dkh .. no3, no2, nh3 all 0.
50 gal .. 2 x 65 power compact, and one 4 ft 40 watt fixture. all 6700 daylight bulbs.
No co2 at this point, but is something I am thinking about ...as it would also get my PH down.... not sure yet???
Yes, CO2 would get the pH down. If you got the pH down to 6.8, with your KH=4, you would have 19 ppm CO2 which is good.

Then the only thing you will need are your nutrients: NO3, PO4, K, Fe, and traces.

I am still not sure about the co2 .. If the tank does good, I may do without?? Just have to decide if the co2 improvement would be worth the addition 200. + cost.
I haven't started adding any nutrients .. was told to hold off a couple months sense it was a new tank. I am kind of leary starting that anyway, I can see myself messing up and crashing my tank
At 3.4 Watts/gal you will need a source of carbon and water column fertilizer.

If you went down to 2 watts/gal you might be able to get by with co2 from decomposing fishfood by slightly overfeeding your fish. But you need to conserve co2 with a glass top, minimal water changes, minimum agitation of the water. This is sort of what Diana Walstad does but she uses a soil substrate instead of adding fertilizer to the water column. You can't do it both ways. What you might want to do is buy Walstad's book. You shouldn't have any questions on her low-tech approach after reading it.

3.4 W/g without co2 and fertilizers is asking for algae and poor growing plants.

Why don't you try DIY CO2 - it costs nothing to start a yeast culture.

Steve Pituch
I had thought about the DYI co2 .. But sense I have a 50 gl tank...would take about three bottles to do it right. I may just go ahead and get a co2 setup....have been watching for deals. Even posted on here to see if anyone had a set up they were not using (no replies so far)
What do you guys think about this deal, and any comments on this particular brand??

I think some of us here have been successful with 2 bottles for a 75 gal tank. I think if you get the champagne yeast and do a bottle every other week and stagger them you should aways have one fresh bottle. Since I don't do DIY CO2 I can't vouch for it, but I think 2 bottles staggered weekly works well.

The link you gave doesn't work. What you need is a plain single stage two gage regulator, and a (MNV-4K2 Clippard needle valve for about $11).

You can get the needle valve directly from clippard. Try co2 gas and welding suppliers for a regulator for about $60 maybe. They will probably lend you a used 20# tank for free if you keep going back to them for co2.

here is the link again .. http://stores.ebay.com/Aqua-Buys
Just roll down until you see the complete system (ph controler included)
Tank Update

Has been a while sense I first posted on my first planted tank.
I have set up a co2 system with controler, and am also adding KN03, Kp04, and Flourish. Haven't gotten down a good doesing suystem yet, As I can see the plants changing from good to not so good at times.
But here is an updated picture of the tank as it is now,

Thank you .. Picture was taken with a differant camera, and also the tank has had a couple months to mature. I think the added CO2 has helped a bit also. Thanks again for the compliments on the tank
