You are starving them to death. You need micro ferts (trace minerals) and macro ferts (Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus). Make sure you get both. You could even add some excel to help with the carbon dioxide issue.

Flourish sells these. If you have a LFS (local fish store) you can get them there. Maybe they might carry another brand. If I were you I would just get SOMETHING in the tank right away. I even bought the "pond" fertilizer because I live out in the country and couldn't find regular brands. I just figured out the dosages. In the meantime I ordered the dry ferts and when they came I switched over.

I don't know what you have around you. If you can get Flourish, you need Flourish nitrogen, Flourish phosphorus and Flourish Potassium. Then they had Flourish - trace minerals. You need that. You could also use Flourish Excel - carbon source, also great for spot treating algae. This is the "Flourish" line of fertilizers. Each company sells their own brands. Just look for Nitrogen (N), Potassium (K) and Phosphorus (P) - your macros. Then trace elements - these will be in one bottle all together.

I don't know your cost. It depends on what you find and where you go.

Online you can get the dry ferts at these places. Greenleaf will get the to you FAST!

there are flourish root tabs that can be shoved into the substrate to feed the heavy root feeders. I used API tabs which gave me a bitter taste in the mouth. So now I have been using small bits of jobes plant stakes, added ever month or so.

Read read read.. that's how I learned.

you can go either the Flourish route OR go the dry fertilizer route.

the flourish products are all liquid products, and the dry fertilizers are, well... you get the idea. and please give those links that bert posted a read. they will help you with your tank.

If you read the links BertH gave you, you will understand what you need to do. Here is another http://beginneraquarist.petfish.net/Beginner%20Aquarist/Home.html

When I go away I use the little RX containers for pills that have a compartment for each day of the week. I premeasure for each day. I get a neighbor kid to come in and dump the right day in. I have another for food. It works great.
