Hi,

I have a piece of driftwood that I'd like to stand up on end like a tree stump. However, the base is very interesting and full of cavities, so I can't really cut it off flat and make it able to stand on its own.

For the same reason, I don't think I can easily put a screw or bolt into in from the bottom to attach a tile or other weighted base.

Q: Is there some kind of resin or putty that can form around the base of the wood, and make the base? Like using play clay to make a pencil stand on end.

It doesn't have to be heavy, as weight could be embedded in it, but it does of course need to be safe for years long submersion and as inert as possible after it's cured.

Plasticine, sculpting clay?

Find floor tile or some smaller tile as a base and gorilla glue the wood to it. The epoxy glue will foam over a few hours. Glue the rough side, not the smooth side for better adhesion.

You can also drill into the wood and tile to secure a stainless steel bolt for mechanical connection rather than glue.

Gorilla glue is a good idea - I'll test that and see if the epoxy is strong enough to hold it vertical.
