It was probably a Ramshorne or Pond snail. They are both fine in there, although you occasionally have to watch the Ramshornes just in case they start nibbling on the plants. They usually won't though, unless the plant has bad leaves.
I agree Sir BlackhOle, the MTS's are the little earthworms of the aquarium, and a great asset to a tank.
