I'm trying to figure out how to build a scape with tall sheer rock wall that flows down into a gental hill. i want everything to have plants on or around it. i dont want the rock wall completely covered but lots of plants. my question is can i mold and shape substrate this way and have it stay. if so what kind of substrate is recomended?

I have never tried this, but Kasselman, in her book "Planted Aquariums, Creation and Maintenance" has a section on making panels out of styrofoam and plants that slope up the sides of the tank:
