I raise plants in a lab, and I have bubbles that will grow under algae on surface layer and create a sulfuric smell. What is happening here??

I raise plants in a lab, and I have bubbles that will grow under algae on surface layer and create a sulfuric smell. What is happening here??

I think the algae consume nitrogen in ammonium sulfate and release hydrogen sulfate gas which smells sulfuric.
