Description: Want your tank to be crystal clean? This hang-on diatom filter is great for polishing water down to one micron. The filter is adjustable to fit most aquariums to 100 gallons. Filters 300 gph and includes a bag of diatomaceous earth. Preemo floss (optional) is recommended for extremely dirty water to filter out larger debris prior to the D.E. filter. The optional universal cartridge can be fitted inside the jar to hold carbon or other filter media. Filter is 115V/60 Hz. One-year warranty. Weighs 3 lbs.

I have used this diatomaceous earth filter on and off for a year of two to get rid of green water when it crops up as a result of my miscalculated fertilizer dosing. The filter works very efficiently. Cleaning a tank of green water quickly using the S1 has allowed me to correct the dosing problem. Although you can do a 2-3 day black-out to kill off green water, something that is free of charge, I prefer to correct the problem quickly with the S1 so that I can continue to enjoy viewing the aquarium.

I like the S1's portability. Load the jar with diatomaceous earth powder and let it run. Make sure the motor does not overheat. This filter is not meant for continuous running.

If your aquarium is 30 US gallons or smaller, you will have to make sure the water flowing under pressure out of the filter does not gouge a hole in your aquarium's substrate. I have adapted my S1 outflow to run into a small plastic cup to avoid this problem.

The S1 does not need priming. Simply switch it on and the pressurized filter will draw water in from the aquarium.

I regard the S1 as an essential tool in the Aquarium Doctor's "black bag."

I\'ve used other diatom filters in the past, but this is by far the best of them.

This filter could hardly be easier to operate. Among other things, mine has helped me clear detritus and minute laterite particles stirred up from rescaping. I have been very satisfied with how it has performed.

The filter I received came with a flimsy plastic jar that was very difficult to remove and cracked while I was unscrewing it after only a few uses. A vastly superior glass jar is also available and does not present any problems.

The instruction booklet recommends applying some petroleum jelly to the rim of the jar before each use to create a better seal. Always do that! It may also be necessary to attach some masking tape to the spot where the filter element attaches to assure a snug fit.

My only real gripe is that the water returns to the tank in a rather turbulent fashion. Some tinkering may be required to alleviate that issue.
