I'm thinking of the same thing, and I am planning of buying one tomorrow when I get paid.

Anyone know where to find the specs for this... looking specifically for the max head height.

Did you try the ehiem website? They usually have datasheets describing pretty much everything about the filter.

Edit:
I just checked the website, and the manual for the ecco's says that a max of 1.5 m from tank top to filter bottom.
