When you chose the plants.. Do you chose for aesteitcs or do you chose for a plants specfic properties?

What are some choices that you have made for the plants specfic traits?

Granted I know that grasses and mosses and low lieing plants are good for foregrounds and tall plants are good for backgrounds.. But I am looking for more specfics.. As to.. Plant Y. Xyxyay gives off twice the oxygen, and plant T. ayziz Gives off twice the CO2, or plant such and such helps give off such and such..

For myself, I have to say I choose plants because I like the way they look, or think they would look good in my tank(s). Some consideration, of course, is given to their growth habits. For example, I would love to try some Eriocaulon, but with kh over 9, and gh around 12, that would be foolish. I also don't want something I have to prune twice a week.

Most of my tanks are really small - 2.5-gallons to 10-gallons. So I have to choose plants that stay small, grow slowly, and/or don't put out too extensive a root system. My 4-gallon 'long' is doing okay with 2 Eriocaulon cinereums, a stand of Micranthemum umbrosum as my fast-grower, a few stems of Hottonia palustris (which gets a little too big when it takes off), Micranthemum sp. (aka "two-leafed hemianthus"), and a few pieces of this, that, and the other, which aren't doing so great and I'll eventually replace with other small species.

Bert - I think E. setaceum would probably give you problems in your tank, but E. cinereum seems to be a very hardy species, which might be worth a try even in your relatively hard water. It likes a little extra boost at the roots - maybe a small piece of a Jobe's spike or a "root tab" of some sort. Other than that, all I can say is, if it grows for me, it'll grow for you. Just be sure to get healthy specimens to start with and they should be fine.

Purely for the looks, I know, I am a shallow man :lol:
Occasionally I go for the challenge, either it is hard to get, or needs a lot of pampering.

I go for the least challenging plants. I have tried everything and I like plants that can take care of themselves if neglected for awhile. I running a 75gallon with DIY Co2, so I am not trying to grow anything too Co2 demanding.
