It looks like you've done it the right way if horizontal growth is your goal. It will take about a week before you really start to see any noticeable spread.

And one tip that might help: try to find some pointed tip tweezers rather than flat or slant tip tweezers. IME I've found that these do the best job of leaving the roots in the substrate where you want them, rather than pulling anything back up with them when you release it. Good for the fine finish work anyway :D
