I jus setup my first planted 26 gal. tank 2 weeks ago, and I was wondering if its a good idea to change water now? I'm using the EcoComplete substrate. Oh I checked the pH this morning and it shows 7.8. I have a feeling thats too high...any way to lower it?

christanto,

Dont be worried about your pH. Test the water out of your tap, most likely its still the same as your tanks pH. Instead worry about testing your tank for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates.

Also read up on the nitrogen cycle to further educate yourself on water quality.

Good luck.

Thanks Andrew! The nitrogen cycle was pretty easy to understand. I checked my pH and its 7.4 now, which is kinda good. I think I have to go buy some testing kits tomorrow. =)

Chris... When I first set up a tank I wait 3-4 weeks before doing the first water change, however others do water changes after the first week. Your tank setup is brand new so give it some time to settle in.

Do you have fish in the tank? Is the tank heavily planted?
