I have noticed a small mountain of gravel on my front glass.
Last i can recall, i have no cichlids in my tank, well almost.
But this is what i do have:
angelfish
bristlenose boys+girls
rummy nose tetras
redtail shark
oto cats
empire gudgeons
rainbowfish.

So who is the culprit(s)?

Do bristlenose dig in preparation for breeding?

empire gudgeons (whatever they are!) are the only fish I don't know about. It's gotta be them!

They can do depending on the location they choose to breed. Although dig isn't really the right word, mine sort of used their caudal fin to blow some sand out from under the bogwood they used. Can you see a male inside a nearby cave?

Ed seeley, spot on.
I had a closer look.
Behind the mound of gravel is some driftwood that has been dug out to make
a cave. There was a bristlenose there but female. No eggs yet.
I presume she is preparing for breeding.
Pitty in a way as the fry will not survive with all the other fish there.

You might be surprised! Mine bred in a community tank and some of the babies survived by hiding behind rockwork. Otherwise give them a cave you can easily move out and when they spawn lift the cave into a spare tank or breeding net.

I agree with Ed. They survive way more than you think. I have a mixed African cichlid tank and have more baby bristles in that tank than I know what to do with...
