I recieved my glosso from a fellow aquarist five days ago. Some of the glossostigmas are turning yellow, others are turning transparent and clear. I heard that glossos thrive in soft water with high light and CO2. Well, I have a constant KH of 7 degrees, a constant pH of 6.8, so the CO2 level comes out to be around 15-25 ppm. Temperature is around 80 farenheit. I have 45watts of normal flourescent above the 10 gallon. What's going on?

I've got a small patch of glosso growing in my 125 (just planted two weeks ago) and it's spreading steadily. I started with only 8 plantlets and all are green and have started growing runners.

My water has KH 8, GH 18-20, pH 6.7 and 81-83°F. Lighting is 384w of PC (3 wpg).

Your tank sounds like mine Lamthuy. 10 gallon, 45watts NO florescent. I would recommend 2 things. First get your CO2 up to 30ppm. This will prevent many issues down the road. Second, make sure that your NO3 and traces are in good order. Start with dosing NO3 to 10ppm at wc, check it mid week and dose back up to 10 if necessary then check it again at the next wc. This will give you a general idea of what your tank uses. Increase dosing frequency or amounts to try and maintain at least 5ppm if not 10-15. A little higher is better, especially at the beginning. Never let it bottom out. My tank has lots of fast growing stems and glosso. Just for comparision, I dose 22ppm NO3, 3ppm P, 8ppmMg, 15-20ppm K and atleast 6-8ml flourish and 4-5ml Flourish Fe weekly. I aslo ocassionally dose 5ppm NOs at wc I feel it needs it or tests low. I do my dosing daily. You can check out my thread about it in the fertalizing forum, "Daily Dosing" tread. You can also see my tank here if you want to see what glosso can do in a month. It needs a serious trimming and thinning. I started that with no more than 50 individual plantlets, planted about .5-1" apart.

It should be fine Lam, just make sure you are fertilizing enough like the nitrates. You have/had a lot of plants in your tank so you may need to add ferts. for that if you don't already, it really sounds like nitrate deficiency to me.

I checked my nitrate and phosphate yesterday and here were the readings:

nitrate: 0ppm
phosphate: .1ppm
pH: 6.8
KH: 7dKH


That's low! 0 nitrate and .1ppm phosphate. Maybe that's why they're dying!

I would assume that is not helping. I have noticed glosso really likes N. try keeping N/P around 10-15/ 2ppm for a couple of weeks and make sure your CO2 is around 30ppm. Everyhting will thank you, except the algae

Gloss does well with enough NO3 (nitrates), and K+(potassium) and light/CO2.

Water hardness plays NO role in it's growth, I've grown it very well at high GH/KH values, above 20 degrees.

You have plenty of light(Gloss can be grown fine at 2w/gal FYI).
CO2 seems to check out.

So all that's left is nutrients.
At high light, you need to be more consistent on your dosing and there is less room for error.
Do not be lam bing!

The plant will melt. Make sure you add about 1/8 teaspoon of KNO3 every 2-3 days along with what you are now doing.

I just added another 15 watts to the 10 gallon. Now, the total wattage is 60 wattts of flourescent light. I'm trying to develop a fertilization routine but my nitrate test kit is not working right now. It's a Red Sea. Bought it a month ago, now it doesn't work anymore. As of this moment my parameters are:

pH 6.6
KH 7 degrees
Phosphate 1ppm
Nitrate- don't know yet, probably around 30 or 40 ppm because I dumped a large amount into the tank.
Temperature- 84 farenheit.

Tha is more than enough light for glosso. I have 45watts over my 10 and the glosso creeps along the substrate and never grows vertically. That much light is actually hard to grow some plants, like rotala indica, as they don't want to grow vertically. All in all, you certainly do not need more than what I have. You will have to be very diligent in maintaining you CO2 and nutrient levels if you want the tank to look nice. Even with 45watts I still need to trim some plants twice a week. Bacopa australis will grow about 4" a week in this tank. PITA sometimes. Hope that helps.

Well, the glossostigmas have been in the tank for a week now. Some of them seems to be growing but I still have not seen any runners yet.

Give it another week.
Less light will help, like 30watts and high CO2.

Dose 1/8 teaspoon of KNO3 2x a week for now.
That's more than enough.
Do 50% weekly water changes.

Do not trust your NO3 test kit from RS, it's junk.

Each dose of KNO3 will add about 11ppm of NO3, the most Gloss will remove is about 3-4ppm a day of NO3.
So22ppm is more than enough even at high light.

It will take a week or 2 for the runners to start. It seems like the plant gets itself established before it expends energy trying to take over an area.

Well, you guys have grown glossostigmas, so i will definitely take your words for it. I know it takes time and every tank is different. I remembered seeing a post in a forum in which a guy planted his glossos and three weeks later, the bottom of his tank was covered with glossos. So, I hope my grows, because I would love to have a carpet for this 10 gallon.
