Hi Bryce,

Awesome journal, loved reading it.
Do you think you'd still have the same return (using the spray bar above the substrate) for your next project? Have you thought about improving this method? I'm setting up a 1000L tank and so far this is the best way i've seen someone do it:)

All the best with your next adventure.

The only improvement that I would consider next time would be to to drill an opening in the back glass to allow for a bulkhead penetration just at the right position at the top of the substrate. The spraybar could then lie along the back substrate without the visually ugly pipe running down the interior of the setup.

BTW, I'm experimenting with my 46g tank and just changed out the substrate last week. I used a mineralized soil base with a soilmaster cap. If that goes well, I'll probably do a similar thing on this tank to rejuvinate it into a low-maintenence, slow-grower setup.

Thank you for the advice. I only have 30mm in the back of my aquarium/stand..! Things are going to be very tight:frusty:

Hey guys. Long time no see!

This is a zombie thread from a million years ago when I first set up this tank. It has been BADLY neglected. Anubias has grown right out the top up to the lights. Removing all of that took over an hour and left a nasty amount of mulm floating around. Iti's a fetid mess right now, but I've been recently inspired to start over, re-learn some of this stuff, and try to set it up as a much lower maintenance (few stemmies) tank. The tank hasn't seen any CO2 for about 4 years. I've got a ton of work to do, both in terms of hardware and getting some new plants. I'm down to only a half-dozen plant species in the tank at this point.

No rush. Little steps. I should be adding CO2 back in when I get the tank refilled, get a new pH probe dialed in, and make sure the solenoid is working reliably. Repeat after me...... almost no stemmies (well, maybe a few to get it going again).

Oh, BTW, some of those little kids I posted at the start of this thread have their own kids now!!!!! Yikes. I'm a grandpa!

Post some pictures! It’d be great to see!

I dunno if any of you remember this aquarium from years ago, but it's still going, along with its original substrate, now more than a decade old. It was neglected for many years, but I've upgraded to Chihiros lighting, and I'm re-learning how to do much of this. The plants are starting to come along, and I've finally got some Aponogeton madagascariensis to grow. For me, a personal triumph after many failures.

The photos aren't very good, and it's nothing like it used to be, but I have a new rimless 150g project in the works. :)
