I've been thinking about a school of small fish for my next tank a 40g. I have several 20Ls running with Crypts, Java ferns, Taiwan moss, Water Lettuce and hornwort growing out for that tank, one has a colony of RCS. I was in PetSmart last night, they had Cherry barbs 1/2 off ($1.26). I happen to now the young woman that runs that dept. She has several tanks of her own and has very high standards for her dept.

I looked in the holding tank and notice two gravid females, ready to drop eggs. She tells me they came in the day before and the two nicer males had been there a few weeks. Normally I only get fish from 1 LFS, club auctions or forum members I know. This was just ment to be. Ready made, conditioned breeding trio, open tank space at home, under $5.

1 hour after assimilation, they look great. Those tanks aren't lite until midmorning...looking forward to see how the 1st night went.

Cherry barbs are nice. the males can be quite colorful. They also can be good algae eaters as well. The problem I have had is that if your conditions are ideal they become quite manic. They constantly chase each other and for me that becomes tiresome. Perhaps my tank was too small. At any rate best of luck with your barbs.

It would appear I have idea conditions, as all they do fly around the 20L. I've given up on trying to catch them to condition for breeding. They can just have a nice life in the Crypt grow-out tank.

Cherry barbs are fun to keep. They look amazing especially the male ones. In a planted tank, the male ones will turn very red if you feed them with quality food (I feel mine with Tetrabits which will turn any red fishes such as cherry barbs & ember tetras look very nice). They don't school at all. If you get lucky, they may even breed in your tank.

I had problem keeping them in the past - they would grow nicely until very fat and die off suddenly. According to a friend, they're over eating and they eat to their death. To overcome this issue, instead of feeding them twice a day, I reduce to once a day.
