Hey all,

went out collecting native plants as a NEAPS field trip today. I got tons of very cool species but many are dirty or have snails/eggs on them. Any ideas for the to remove all the nasties withough completely damaging the plants. I have been considering either a peroxide soak or a diluted bleach soak but what concentrations should I use? Someone recommeded to me potassium permigrante (spelling) but don't know where to find that locally and most things are closed now anyway;)

Any help would be most apprecieated:)

Thanks!

Peroxide has always worked for me. I'd do a 50/50 solution of H2O and H2O2 for thirty seconds to a minute depending on how tough you think the plant is.

I usually do a general inspection and physical removal before "the bath". I don't have a problem with snails on plants I do this to.

In addition to Hydrogen Peroxide, you can use Potassium Permanganate which is located in the water softeners and water softener supplier aisles at Ace Hardware and Sears. Alum USP is another good choice, you can find it in the spice aisle (pickling spices) at most grocery stores and any compounding Drug Store will have Alum USP. I've got some basic information on mixing and use at this webpage.

Honestly though, most folks city water supply is probably chlorinated enough that a good soak will accomplish the same thing. I think Tom Barr has mentioned this more than once. My head is pretty thick though, I still use a stronger method though.

I also just collected a lot of natives that were covered in algae. Does the peroxide work for algae? I already planted them in my outdoor tank.http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/showthread.php?t=7285&highlight=outdoor+tankI pulled out all the tropicals, and filled it with the natives. I was hoping good tank management would kill the algae. Is there a way to treat now with them planted already. There are two fish in the tank also.

The bleach dilution is 5%; that would be 1 part liquid bleach plus 19 parts water to make one part bleach in 20 parts solution. Two minutes in the bleach solution does in most attached algae, but not snail eggs or other eggs, such as leech eggs. snails and leeches are very sensitive to bleach once they have hatched. even a 1% bleach solution makes snails and leeches drop off and kills them quickly.
