My office tank

Hi all, I have been a fish hobbyist for awhile now and never used plants in my tanks. One of my friends asked me to check out Aquaforest here in San Francisco and after I left that place, I wanted to try plants in my tank.

An iwagumi tank seems to be less maintenance and I like how the HC looks as groundcover.

Here are the specs for my office tank:

  • Tank: 3-gallon Eclipse tank (took off the rim, hood and filter)
  • Filteration: Zoo Med canister filter
  • Substrate: Aquasoil Amazoina II Powder
  • CO2: ADA CO2 System 74/YA ver.2 (1-2 bbs)
  • Heat: Marineland 25W heater = 74 F
  • Lighting: Home Depot Special 27W CF (9 hours w/timer)
  • Water Change: 1 gallon a week; pH ~6.8
  • Flora: Hemianthus callitrichoides & Eleocharis acicularis (before), Blyxa Japonica (after)
  • Fauna: 8 Golden Neons, 1 Otto & 8 Red Cherry Shrimps

11/28/2007: About a month old, HC hasn't filled in and hairgrass is too hard to maintain in this nano tank.

11/28/2007: I took out the hairgrass and replace it with Blyxa Japonica because it doesn't grow as fast as the hairgrass.

1/07/2008: HC filled in a bit and Blyxa is started to grow. Sorry for the phone camera shots.

1/29/2008: HC and Blyxa doing nicely.

2/05/2008: HC and Blyxa filled out.

I took them out for a little bit because I added some chemical algae remover containing copper. I have a little BBA in the tank right now.

What a cool little tank, Silver!!!! Very nice looking, love your rocks and choice of fish! Great choice of plants, too! The blyxa worked out very nicely for you!
Thanks!!! I think one of my Blyxas is growing a flower or something. It is a brownish stem and I can't get a clear picture of it.

Do you add any ferts to the water column?

Thanks,
Creighton
Yup........~1mL of ADA Brighty K, Lights, and Step 1 (once a day) and a pinch of KH up powder for the HC (after water change).

Man, you're allowed to plug in appliances at work. Even with water.
Is this your own office.
Management is pretty cool with my little tank. I'm at the bottom of the totem pole and I just get a small cubicle. If I had an office, I would have order something like an ADA 60P. :D

WOW! i love the look!
Please give us tips on how you are getting your HC to grow like that. I heard that you need a smooth substrate so that they HC could grow. (I have rather chunky substrate, 2-3-4 mm.) is that why they have a hard time expanding?
Thanks......I don't know if it is a tip, but here are my parameters:
  • Substrate: Aquasoil Amazoina II Powder (the smaller the better because it fills the voids where the small roots are)
  • CO2: ADA CO2 System 74/YA ver.2 (1-2 bps)
  • Heat: ~74 F (ambient air temp in the office)
  • Lighting: Home Depot Special 27W CF (9 hours w/timer)
  • Water Change: 1 gallon a week; pH ~6.8
  • ADA Brighty K, ADA Special Lights, ADA Step 1 (6-8 drops)
High lights, ferts, CO2 is the key.

It took about 3-4 months for me to know the difference. Hopefully, my Utricularia graminifolia grows in like that. Now, it is spreading faster than my HC.

I'm thinking about your ADA CO2 setup for my 10G. At a rate of 1-2bps, how long does the cartridge last? I like it because it's small enough to conceal behind the tank. Also, do you turn it off at night (if at all possible with it)? Ah! One last thing: how does it smell? Do you have the scented cartridge?
Wow, so many questions... sorry!

Ask away......at a rate of 1-2 bps, if no leaks about 6-8 weeks @ 9-hours a day using the ADA EL-Valve (worth every penny) with an electrical digital timer (8am-5pm). The smell of the water or cartridge?? My tank doesn't have any smell, but if you unscrew the cartridge, a hint of fragrance comes out (using #2 right now).

But, remember I have a 3-gallon tank and you have a 10-gallon tank which will use more CO2 due to more volume of water. Thus, you're looking at maybe 4-6 weeks perhaps?

Thanks for the prompt reply. I'm considering both the ADA CO2 setup and the Hydor CO2 Green NRG, that also uses CO2 cartridges, but I guess not on a proprietary format. If we could only know how long the Hydor system lasts now :)
I think 20 dollars a month for CO2 is a bit steep, but it's such a nice system, though. Well, as an analogy, ADA is the Apple of aquariums, you can find the same performance for less, but never as sexy. :)
