I opened the paper today and found an interesting article on the front page:

Noxious Weeds, are they hiding in your aquarium?

I was surprised to see so much emphasis on this here in rural Idaho, but the local economy is based in agriculture and this sort of thing gets attention now and then. This article specifically mentions aquarium keepers as a part of the problem.

Just one more reminder to be responsible about disposal of trimmings. Few of us would release non-native fish into local waters but somehow plants "seem" less dangerous. The truth is that certain species can do substantial damage to local waterways.

The wierd thing is these three plants have been federally banned for over 10 years. Hydrilla for well over 20 years. Nobody has sold hydrilla in decades, if it ever was sold as an aquarium plant. More than likely it was sold as a pond plant, which is what the other two are as well. Elodea, (the only one of the three that has been used in aquariums) is actually used by water treatment facilities, to this day. Since Elodea is on the federal noxious weed list, I don't know how it could ever be transported into your state to reach the stores.
