They look fantastic! I love these fish, I have had the worse luck trying to find out which is the female. Any tips for an old man?

Im with you on this. I have tried countless times to try and ID the female with no luck. I have a number of them in a 150G and sometimes I notice what seems to be a mating dance, and they both look the same. Maybe somebody will chime in and give us a positive answer. Your photos look very nice. Thanks for sharing with us.

 

Do you have any luck in breeding them? To me, they are the greatest schooling fish around. I might be wrong but I just love the sight of them.

When I had harlequins, I noticed about half were smaller and more brightly colored, half were larger and duller. When the fish did their little shimmy dance, it was almost always between the smaller, brighter ones. That led me to believe that the competition was between the males to show off for the females.
I could be quite wrong though.

The one that the eggs come out of is the female. Beyond that....... it's pretty tough to tell for sure.
